A centuries-old tradition during the holidays in Newfoundland and Labrador, mummering is on a resurgence with the help of cultural heritage activists. Simply, mummering involves friends and family getting “rigged up” in costume, using anything they can scavenge in their home to disguise their identity or gender – curtains, lampshades, old clothing – before going unannounced to neighbours’ homes for impromptu kitchen parties with music and drink.
